Although Pacquiao nearly controlled the fight in the third round, but Marquez kept his feet up to the last round. Marquez landed more punches at a higher percentage at the later rounds but failed to defend his title against Manny Pacquiao.

“I don’t like the decision,” Marquez said. “I still feel I am the champion. It was a bad decision. That first knockdown, he got me cold, but then I adjusted my game plan and I thought from then on, I dictated the whole fight. … The people are the best judge, and the people are booing him. I won.”

“I don’t think so,” Pacquiao said of a third fight with Marquez. “This business is over.”

Pacquiao humbled and appeared most surprised after the winner was announced and he admitted that he was quite lucky to have ended up the victor and now the New WBC World Super featherweight Champion.

Janina San Miguel, a 17 year-old lass was declared the 2008 Binibining Pilipinas 2008-World. Jennifer Barrientos was Binibining Pilipinas 2008 -Universe and Patricia Fernandez is Binibining Pilipinas 2008-International. The pageant was held last March 9, 2008 at the Araneta Colesium in Quezon City, Philippines. Everyone was shocked when the host announced the winners.

Here is the complete news about the Bb. Pilipinas pageant from Philippine Entertainment Portal.

Many beauty pageant enthusiasts thought Saturday night’s Binibining Pilipinas 2008 beauty pageant coronation night has a lot of upsets and surprises. First on their list was what happened to Candidate No. 8, 18-year-old Danielle Kirsten Muriel Castaño.

Almost everyone at the Araneta Coliseum thought the pretty Quezon City teenager was sure to win any of the titles at stake. With an amazing number of special awards, plus her impressive performance during the question-and-answer portion, a lot of those who guessed her to be one of the titleholders were disappointed when she was announced as the 1st runner-up.

Danielle, who answered the separation of her parents as the hardest problem she ever faced, won the following special awards: Ms Bacchus Energy Drink, Ms Photogenic, Ms Natasha Poise and Grace, Ms Philippine Airlines, and Ms Ever Bilena. Collecting herself after saying “overwhermed” instead of “overwhelmed” during her exchange with pageant host Paolo Bediones, she aced her Q&A afterwards, when she said the separation of her parents made her the strong person that she is today.

Another audience favorite, Candidate No. 18 Elizabeth Jacqueline Nacuspag, was declared 2nd runner-up before Danielle’s name was called. She was doing fine during her conversation with Paolo, but became emotional when she answered the question given to her by basketball star-TV host Chris Tiu, who was one of the judges.

THE TITLE HOLDERS. First to be given a crown was Candidate No. 2 Patricia Fernandez, who was named Bb. Pilipinas-International. Earlier, she won the special award Ms Natasha.

Asked during the question and answer portion, which person she admires the most, she answered “Mother Theresa.” She was on her way to impressing the judges with her answer until she made a blooper by saying “I believe all of us should do her.” She quickly corrected herself afterwards.

The 22-year-old speech communication graduate from the University of the Philippines reportedly fainted backstage before the announcement of the winners. She was quickly attended to and recovered in time for the announcement.

Next to be crowned was Candidate No. 7 Jennifer Barrientos from San Mateo, Rizal as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe. Her answer to the question “who are the people she talks to when she has a problem” drew cheers and applause from the audience. The tourism grad from the University of Sto. Tomas said she trusts her parents with her problems and talks to them first instead of her friends.

Least expected to win a crown after her disastrous question-and-answer moment was Candidate No. 15, 17-year-old Janina San Miguel, as Bb. Pilipinas-World. The Miss University of the East first runner-up buckled, messed up and gave in to the pressure of the Q&A portion, eliciting boos and heckling from the audience.

She continuously said sorry to everyone for being a “pageant first timer” until she finally made it out of the difficult situation she was in by answering in Tagalog. Janina won Best In Swimsuit and Best In Long Gown earlier.

OTHER WINNERS. Other candidates who won last night were Rizza Liz Catigan (No. 24), Ms. Talent; Evangeline May Castillo (No. 6), Ms. Friendship; and Roxanne Tadique (No. 20), Manila Bulletin Readers’ Choice Award.

The other five finalists who made it to the Top 10 were Jaysel Arrozal (No. 12), Kathleen Phyllis Guerrero (No. 9), Karen Golar No. 14), Toni Alyessa Hipolito (No. 3), and Tabetha Jo Frick No. 13).

The Top 10 finalists and winners were selected by the judges with Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte as chairman. Other members of the panel of judges include U.S. Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney, Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura, Philippine Ambassador to Spain Joseph D. Bernardo, United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines Chairman Dr. Vijay Mallya, Chateau Petrus’s Jean Moueix, Entrepreneurs School of Asia founder Ms. Vivienne Tan, Sofitel Philippine Plaza President Oscar Salvacion, Marimar’s Marian Rivera, actor Dennis Trillo, and Chris Tiu.

Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1994 and actress-TV host Charlene Gonzalez, who effectively worked up the crowd even during commercials breaks, shared the stage with Paolo Bediones as co-host. Kapamilya star and Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman worked with Kapuso people once again as anchor for the show.

The Whiplash Dancers, Alfred Vargas, Marco Alcaraz, Paolo Paraiso, Aljur Abrenica, and The Angelos were the guest performers last night. - Philippine Entertainment Portal

While Pacquiao would win his trilogy with Morales via emphatic knockout victories, the biggest name in Marquez’ rêsumê in the same time frame would be the loss to Chris John. In the past year Marquez would make up for lost time taking on Barrera and Juarez to make his case for the much-awaited rematch with Pacquiao.

Now Marquez and Pacquiao are prepared to engage in a bill dubbed ‘Unfinished Business’ and the fighter nicknamed ‘Dinamita’ is thirsting for revenge.

“This is such a crucial fight for me, my family, the Mexican people and all my fans everywhere,” Marquez told Reuters. “I’m going to use a mixture of aggression, counter-punching and lateral movement. But above all, (use) my intelligence as a boxer to defeat Manny.”

Marquez then went on to address Pacquiao’s reputation as a ‘Mexican killer’ after four conclusive defeats over Mexican greats, and future hall of famers, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.

“Manny is very strong,” he admits, “but he is not technical. He doesn’t like it when you go looking for the fight. He’s called the terminator of Mexican fighters but with me, no.”

Now with the added incentive of avenging the losses of his fellow Mexican champions who have fallen to Pacquiao, Marquez will be more determined than ever to derail the force from the Philippines. Pacquiao will be equally determined to prove definitively that he is not only better than Marquez, but better than all of the great Mexican champions of this generation.

Pacquiao vs Marquez 2, the “Unfinished Business” will be broadcast on HBO pay per view.

The Spaceport America in the New Mexico desert

September 11, 2007 at 2:34 am | In Science & Technology | No Comments

By Eric Adams

The press conference unveiling the design for Spaceport America, the New Mexico facility from which Virgin Galactic intends to launch paying customers on suborbital spaceflights, was originally going to be held on July 27. The day before, however, a tragic explosion killed three engineers at a test facility in California operated by Burt Rutan’s Scaled Composites, the company building Virgin’s spacecraft.

spaceport_485.jpg

The press conference was quickly postponed to September 4, which unfortunately turned out to be the day after adventurer Steve Fossett, a close friend of Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson and pilot of Rutan’s around-the-world Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer aircraft, disappeared on a flight over the Nevada desert. His condition remains unknown, but many fear he perished in a crash.

The announcement went ahead because it wasn’t until Tuesday morning that news of Fossett’s disappearance began to circulate. The timing is terrible, of course, for Branson and the Virgin team—who, according to a statement released by Branson, are hopeful that Fossett has survived.

spaceport_cutaway.jpg

The spaceport is quite striking, which isn’t surprising given that it was designed by famed British architect Norman Foster, in collaboration with American design firm URS Corp. The facility is a low-slung structure that uses natural earth as a berm and relies on passive energy for heating and cooling, with photovoltaic panels for electricity and water-recycling capabilities. A press release describes “a rolling concrete shell that acts as a roof with massive windows opening to a stunning view of the runway and spacecraft. The terminal and hangar facility are projected to cost about $31 million, and will provide a destination experience for visitors to Spaceport America. It will include Virgin Galactic’s pre-flight and post-flight training facilities and lounges, as well as the maintenance hangar for two White Knight 2 and five Spaceship 2 aircraft.”

spaceport_overhead.jpg

It hasn’t been a good run recently for the aerospace community, with the Scaled explosion, the death last week of Paul MacCready, and now the unfolding Fossett saga. At the very least, Foster’s design is a sorely needed shot in the arm.

Philippines Wins Boxing World Cup over Mexico , 5-1

August 13, 2007 at 4:27 am | In Boxing, Sports | 3 Comments

A brutal first-round stoppage suffered by the boyish Bautista showed he was wrongly let loose against the rock-fisted Daniel Ponce de Leon of Mexico, who mauled the hapless farmer’s son from Bohol to retain his WBO junior featherweight title.

Bautista’s shocking defeat failed to rob the Philippines of the glory of winning the Cup.

A crushing knockout win by Gerry Peñalosa Sunday powered the Philippines to a 5-1 win over Mexico in their battle for the Boxing World Cup, and helped to take the sting out of Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista’s fall in one round to another Mexican.

Boxing World Cup: Philippines versus Mexico Results

Explore the geographic locations found in Popular Science special issue via amazing annotated satellite imagery.

gearth_instructions.jpg

To coincide with Popular Science special Future of the Environment issue, They’ve constructed a Google Earth layer highlighting several geographic points of environmental interest around the world. If you’re already a Google Earth user, download and open the layer here to begin browsing; if not, now is a perfect time to start exploring one of the more amazing pieces of mapping software ever conceived!

1. Start by heading over to earth.google.com to download the free application. It works for WIndows, Mac OS X and Linux. Google recommends having either a desktop computer no older than four years or a notebook no older than two years to run the software smoothly.

2. Download Popular Science Future of the Environment layer here, and double-click the downloaded file (popsci_future_environment.kml) to open with Google Earth. If it doesn’t open automatically, choose File->Open in Google Earth to open it manually.

3.With the layer loaded, the globe should be dotted with white and green PopSci.com markers indicating places of interest. Double-clicking them will zoom in and open descriptive boxes with expanded text, images and links.

4.You can also double-click each placemark (arranged by folders) in your “Places” panel at left to zoom in on individual locations. Think of this as the layer’s table of contents.

5.Some placemarks contain links to additional images to overlay on the Google Earth viewer. Clicking these links will open a new overlay in your “Temporary Places” folder.

Try it and Happy Exploring!

The Human Tissue Bank “BODY BANK”

June 18, 2007 at 12:35 pm | In Science & Technology | No Comments

Add to Technorati Favorites

A skin-care company builds a futuristic facility to stockpile human tissue. Should you donate yours? Do you think this is good for Us? But before you answer those questions…read this article first to give you an idea. I’ve read this four times and you know it really gives me an idea on how to answer those questions.”philerweb

For the most part, this is good; it leads to new drugs and disease cures. But for decades, patients’-rights groups, bioethicists and lawyers have argued that patients should have control over what happens to their tissue once they’ve parted with it. “Those samples contain genetic information that could cause you to lose your insurance,” says Lori Andrews, director of the Institute for Science, Law and Technology at the Illinois Institute of Technology. “Or they may be used in research that violates your personal or religious beliefs.” But scientists have long argued that tracking the desires of each donor would be a logistical nightmare.

bodybank.jpg

Now a California-based maker of skin-care products, Dermacia, has developed technology that it claims will give donors an unprecedented degree of control over their cells. Dermacia, through its subsidiary company National Genecular Institute (NGI), recently sealed a deal with the University of Iowa to create a $76-million “biobank” called BioTrust and other research laboratories. NGI will use the bank’s samples for developing its own products but will also sell samples to researchers worldwide. The company hopes that its 100-acre, partially underground facility, due to open in 2009, will be a model for future biobanks.

“It’s being built to withstand bomb blasts and tornadoes,” says Tannin Fuja, NGI’s chief scientific officer. Plans include a fully automated storage and retrieval system coordinated by a small army of robotic arms. The machines will inscribe bar codes onto samples, spin them in centrifuges, transfer them into vials, transform them into immortal cell lines that grow and divide indefinitely, and file them away in massive computerized freezers.

Experts applaud NGI’s high-tech ambitions, but some worry that the company may be misleading donors about what they’ll get in exchange for their tissues. According to Fuja, BioTrust’s automated process will enable donors to control how their tissue is used and to reap greater benefits from donation. During the consent process, donors will select the studies that they do or do not want done on their tissues, and the computer system will store that data along with the details of their samples. If a scientist wants to purchase samples from, say, African-American males under 40 for a study on alcoholism, a computer will generate a list of samples fitting the criteria of race, age and willingness to participate in alcoholism research.

BioTrust also plans on an unusual, interactive donor-bank relationship: Donors will be asked to log onto a Web site to update their medical information, which will be linked to their tissue sample through a code number. Tissues often aren’t connected to medical records in this way because of concerns over privacy and genetic discrimination. But personalized samples are much more valuable than anonymous ones. If scientists know that you have a family history of, for example, Parkinson’s disease, they can compare your samples with those of others with a similar history to help find a genetic cause and, hopefully, a treatment.

In return for their time and tissues, Fuja says, “donors can ask to be notified about how their samples are used in research” and whether that research leads to advances that might benefit them. But NGI makes no guarantees. Its consent form states that the company is under no obligation to share medical information with donors or to alert them of new products or clinical trials that might help them. Andrews takes issue with this arrangement. “BioTrust is a for-profit venture,” she says. “NGI will benefit tremendously from these tissues. Why shouldn’t the donors be treated like partners?” If NGI fulfills its promise of giving donors control over their tissues, however, it may be a step in the right direction.
